A standard is a developmental goal.  Academic standards are what students are expected to know and be able to do by certain grade levels.  There are voluntary national standards for various subjects created by professional groups within each field.  National standards are an effort to provide an equal framework for all.  Most states within the United States create state standards that closely align with national standards.  At the local level, a curriculum is created based on state standards and/or national standards.  Standards should not be confused with methodology or how to teach.  Standards guide learning programs.  Standards are intentionally reviewed and revised from time to time. An effective leader is knowledgeable about academic standards at the national, state, and/or local level.
